Why It Takes Patients Years to Book Their First Vision Consultation
The average time between someone’s first noticeable vision symptom and their first consultation for elective vision correction is measured in years, not weeks. Night driving gets a little harder. Reading print gets a little more strained. Performance in a sport or hobby quietly declines. Almost none of it gets attributed to an eye problem — it gets attributed to age, fatigue, or just “getting older.”
That gap isn’t a marketing problem in the traditional sense. It’s a perception problem. The person experiencing the symptom doesn’t yet think of themselves as a patient, so they’re not searching for a surgeon, comparing reviews, or clicking ads for cataract or LASIK procedures. They’re not in the market you’re currently advertising to — because in their own mind, they don’t have a medical issue yet.
This is also exactly why so much ophthalmology marketing underperforms. Search and social ads targeting people who are actively looking for “cataract surgery near me” are competing for a small, already-decided slice of the population — and that slice is exactly where private equity-backed groups concentrate their budgets, because it’s the easiest audience to identify and the most expensive to win.
The much larger opportunity is the years-long gap before that decision gets made. Reaching someone while they still think their symptom is normal — and helping them realize it might not be — builds trust well before they’re comparing providers. By the time they’re ready to book, the practice that educated them first is usually the only one they consider.
Closing that gap takes a different kind of content than a typical procedure ad: something that meets people where their actual self-image is, not where their diagnosis will eventually be. Practices that figure out how to do this consistently tend to generate consultations 60–90 days earlier than they would through search or referral alone — and they do it largely outside the auction everyone else is fighting in.
